MORE RUBBISH FROM RUSH

“We’re not horses.”

Rush Limbaugh

"The only way to reduce the number of nuclear weapons is to use them."
Rush Limbaugh

In his wonted, bloated and hyperbolic hysteria, Rush Limbaugh muttered that the Left (i.e. Democrats and Liberals) are full of doom, gloom and pessimism.

You're right Rush.

They are full of these things because of the rash typhoons of negativity that rush out of hateful windbags like you.

While it is true that the Left is also negative and critical about the right (i.e. Republicans and Conservatives), I prefer the left's venom.

Maybe it's a matter of style.

I prefer Bill Maher or Jon Stewart doing their skewering more than I do Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or Ann Coulter doing theirs.

Both sides screech and shriek.

Both can be irritating and insulting.

Important issues are often not heard or discussed because of these unpleasant cacophonies of cynicism and negativism.

A CEMETERY OF NEOCON DREAMS

"Go massive; sweep it all up; destroy it all. Things related and not, it doesn't matter."
Notes and orders made by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (about going to war against Iraq) hours after the 9/11 attacks

“Colin Powell was only partially right when he warned before the U.S. invasion, ‘If you break it, you own it.’ What he didn't add is that the locals will hate you for it, and try to kill you every day until you give it back.”
TruthDig posted April 11, 2007 (web only)
Iraqis Finally Unite--Against the U.S.
Robert Scheer

As the world knows, the invasion of Iraq was not for liberation but for occupation and usurpation.
If Bush and Dick simply wanted to liberate the Iraqi people from Saddam Hussein, they would have pulled out of Iraq sooner and not later...
Or in this case...
NEVER.
Bush's legs have not been amputated, but his legacy has.
No honor, no glory, no victory…only dishonor, infamy and deaths.
Bush has been beating around the bush all of this time.
He has always mouthed what his speech writers have written (or whispered into his ears), but his policies have been abject failures.
Blood is on his hands, on Dick’s hands, on Rummy’s hands…and on the hands of all Neo Cons and greedy oilmen friends and cronies who, for their oily and serpentine ends, wanted Afghanistan and Iraq invaded and occupied…
BEFORE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001!
Blood, flesh and bones are splattering all over their deceitful faces.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson said he is worried that Iraq has made his state
unprepared to handle a hurricane. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer released a report showing his National Guard had only a fraction of mission critical equipment needed to respond to a terrorist attack. Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano said the deployments could impact how her state fights wildfires.Even the nation's top Guard officer, Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum, says no state has more than 65% of the equipment they need. "If we don't have the equipment we need, the reaction time is slow, and time equals lives lost," Blum said. "Those lives are American lives."Last year, nearly every governor signed a letter opposing Bush's use of federal control over the National Guard.

UNPLUG HIM!

"There is no possible triumph in Iraq and very little hope left."
Editorial
The New York Times
Four Years Later in Iraq
Published: April 12, 2007

It's too bad that no one was able to stop George W. Bush before he blew up Iraq.

The Decider plugged us into an unnecessary and fabricated war,

and gave Shotgun Dick that big Halliburton grin.

Credit Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally with saving the leader of the free world from self-immolation.

Mulally told journalists at the New York auto show that he intervened to prevent President Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of Ford's hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid at the White House last week. Ford wanted to give the Commander-in-Chief an actual demonstration of the innovative vehicle, so the automaker arranged for an electrical outlet to be installed on the South Lawn and ran a charging cord to the hybrid. However, as Mulally followed Bush out to the car, he noticed someone had left the cord lying at the rear of the vehicle, near the fuel tank.

"I just thought, 'Oh my goodness!' So, I started walking faster, and the President walked faster and he got to the cord before I did. I violated all the protocols. I touched the President. I grabbed his arm and I moved him up to the front," Mulally said. "I wanted the president to make sure he plugged into the electricity, not into the hydrogen This is all off the record, right?"

MY ODONTALGIA

For there was never yet philosopher
That could endure the toothache patiently...

Shakespeare

In order for me to be accepted into the Peace Corps, I had to get a complete dental check-up.
As it turned out, there was an excellent dentist in Kabul, Afghanistan.
I remember his huge, thick fingers, and wondered how he could be a dentist with such fingers.
But my doubts were proven wrong, because he was a very good dentist.
He remarked, "This fellow did some excellent work."
He was referring to the gold bridge that had come loose in the lower, left side of my mouth.
This bridge caused no pain.
The pain occurred when I had root canals done on my two bottom (center) teeth.

I actually enjoyed my experience while in the dentist chair.
I had beautiful, young female assistants taking care of me.
Calming music played.
Nitrous oxide poured into my brain.

My dentist put some type of antiseptic inside the two teeth that had been given root canals.
THEN THERE WAS PAIN!
I started taking some Percodan.
It helped.
But the pain was still intense.
A few days later I visited a friend who lived in a huge dome in the mountains.
Snow lay on the ground.
For dinner we had some delicious trout.
THEN THE PAIN GOT WORSE.
I had taken my last Percodan pill.
Now I was holding an ice pack on my pain.
BUT THE PAIN DIDN’T GO AWAY.
When I got back into town, I immediately got some more Percodan.
As with most things, the pain passed.
This toothache was the worst pain I had ever experienced, except for some ribs that I had bruised one time while doing construction work.
I can't imagine how people endured their toothaches before today's miraculous pain-killing drugs.

HOLIDAYS

Easter and Christmas.
For kids these are the best holidays.
(Many would say that Halloween is although it's not a holiday.)
Easter was for me as much or more delightful than Christmas.
My parents always made sure that there was an Easter basket full of candies.
The knowledge that there was going to be this basket under my bed on Easter morning was very exciting.
My dad always hid money, candy and eggs in the backyard on Easter morning.
The real meanings of Easter and Christmas are not too evident or important for children.
What's important are the presents and candies.
Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are good for business and children!
Happy Easter!

LEMONS LIES AND USED CAR SALESMEN

The Iraq war is a big, tragic lemon.
Thank Dick Cheney and George W. Bush.
Nixon was a used car salesman before he became the 37th president of the United States.
Bush and Dick weren't car salesmen, but while occupying the White House they sold us lemons.
Bush and Dick knew that they were selling us lemons.
And they didn't care.
Now, they, and pro-war proponents say, "Sure, we were wrong about the reasons for going to war. But we're at war now, so let's continue to fight this war...until we win."
Bush and Dick have put America in a hole, and both keep digging the hole deeper and deeper.
Make sense?
What Bush and Dick did is closer to the truth in the latest statement issuing out of the Decider's mouth:
PURE EVIL!
Quack, quack, quack!

EASTER VACATION

Come on, Barney, we're goin' to the ranch to find us some armadillos and rabbits before Dick gets there and scares 'em all away with his shotgun.
Laura, got my beer and pretzels packed?
Not too much on TV this weekend, but I've got my Three Stooges’ movies.
I just love those guys.
They kind of remind me of myself and I.
Boy, oh boy, this Easter vacation is just in time.
It'll let me get my mind off of Iraq and Iran for awhile.
I'm the Decider, and when I decide it's time to fly, I fly;
When I decide it’s time to lie, I lie;
When I decide that it's time to surge, I surge.
And right now I’ve decided to relax.
Come on, Barney, let’s go get those terrorists before they get us.

A KING AND AN ACE

The King is no joker, but the Decider Long War President Bush is.

Some of the cards were missing from his deck before and after the Decider landed on a different type of deck as an Ace (or ass) when he proudly announced that the MISSION WAS ACCOMPLISHED in Iraq.

When the Bush family's oil buddies in Saudi Arabia (NO LESS THAN THE KING HIMSELF!) begin telling the world the same things that the American people (AND THE WORLD!) have been telling Mr. Decider, it is time for this Long War President to put out the fires of his burning bush in Iraq!

George W. Bush is scaring us to death.

Start Impeachment hearings now, or things will only escalate and become worse.

But Impeachment will be moot and meaningless after Iran begins to get bombed…no thanks to Mr. mad Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

But a few rational voices are offering resolutions for avoiding MORE WAR.

One voice is that of former secretary of state Madeleine Albright.

She fears what most of us do, a war with Iran, and she is suggesting that a third party should investigate and reveal the truth about what exactly happened when the British soldiers were captured by Iran.

Will the paragon of animals blow it again?

He told the biggest lie of all and has not been prosecuted for it. What he doesn't realize is that's not because he was not under oath. It's because he didn't tell it to a Congressional committee. He told it to the entire world and that's not a crime even though to date it's gotten 3400 American soldiers killed, more than 25,000 American soldiers wounded and depending on what reports you choose to read, between 200,000 and 600,000 Iraqis killed. Mr. Bush's lie is the lie that continues to give, as more soldiers and Iraqis die and are grievously wounded daily.

Bush and the Politics of Falsehoods

If You're Going to Lie, Lie Big

By CHRISTOPHER BRAUCHLI

The Botched US Raid That Led to the Hostage Crisis
By Patrick Cockburn

A failed American attempt to abduct two senior Iranian security officers on an official visit to northern Iraq was the starting pistol for a crisis that 10 weeks later led to Iranians seizing 15 British sailors and Marines.
Early on the morning of 11 January, helicopter-born US forces launched a surprise raid on a long-established Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil in Iraqi Kurdistan. They captured five relatively junior Iranian officials whom the US accuses of being intelligence agents and still holds.
In reality the US attack had a far more ambitious objective, The Independent has learned. The aim of the raid, launched without informing the Kurdish authorities, was to seize two men at the very heart of the Iranian security establishment.
Better understanding of the seriousness of the US action in Arbil - and the angry Iranian response to it - should have led Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence to realise that Iran was likely to retaliate against American or British forces such as highly vulnerable Navy search parties in the Gulf. The two senior Iranian officers the US sought to capture were Mohammed Jafari, the powerful deputy head of the Iranian National Security Council, and General Minojahar Frouzanda, the chief of intelligence of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, according to Kurdish officials.
The two men were in Kurdistan on an official visit during which they met the Iraqi President, Jalal Talabani, and later saw Massoud Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), at his mountain headquarters overlooking Arbil.
"They were after Jafari," Fuad Hussein, the chief of staff of Massoud Barzani, told The Independent. He confirmed that the Iranian office had been established in Arbil for a long time and was often visited by Kurds obtaining documents to visit Iran. "The Americans thought he [Jafari] was there," said Mr Hussein.
Mr Jafari was accompanied by a second, high-ranking Iranian official. "His name was General Minojahar Frouzanda, the head of intelligence of the Pasdaran [Iranian Revolutionary Guard]," said Sadi Ahmed Pire, now head of the Diwan (office) of President Talabani in Baghdad. Mr Pire previously lived in Arbil, where he headed the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Mr Talabani's political party.
The attempt by the US to seize the two high-ranking Iranian security officers openly meeting with Iraqi leaders is somewhat as if Iran had tried to kidnap the heads of the CIA and MI6 while they were on an official visit to a country neighbouring Iran, such as Pakistan or Afghanistan. There is no doubt that Iran believes that Mr Jafari and Mr Frouzanda were targeted by the Americans. Mr Jafari confirmed to the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, that he was in Arbil at the time of the raid.
In a little-noticed remark, Manouchehr Mottaki, the Iranian Foreign Minister, told IRNA: "The objective of the Americans was to arrest Iranian security officials who had gone to Iraq to develop co-operation in the area of bilateral security."
US officials in Washington subsequently claimed that the five Iranian officials they did seize, who have not been seen since, were "suspected of being closely tied to activities targeting Iraq and coalition forces". This explanation never made much sense. No member of the US-led coalition has been killed in Arbil and there were no Sunni-Arab insurgents or Shia militiamen there.
The raid on Arbil took place within hours of President George Bush making an address to the nation on 10 January in which he claimed: "Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops." He identified Iran and Syria as America's main enemies in Iraq though the four-year-old guerrilla war against US-led forces is being conducted by the strongly anti-Iranian Sunni-Arab community. Mr Jafari himself later complained about US allegations. "So far has there been a single Iranian among suicide bombers in the war-battered country?" he asked. "Almost all who involved in the suicide attacks are from Arab countries."

MONTH OF VENUS

"We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war."
Molly Ivins

The month of April.

The cherry blossoms are in

Bloom.

The trumpets of war are blasting their detestable songs of

Gloom.

April is National Poetry and Pecan month.

Lyric skies

With

Pecan pies.

But every month has been war month since Bush and Dick lied us into the Iraq debacle.

The Decider has become one of the most stubborn leaders of all time.

He is no Caligula or Hitler, but he is no Gandhi or Churchill either.

Let us hope that April brings May showers and not more deadly hours.

I Shall Not Care

By Sara Teasdale

WHEN I am dead and over me bright April

Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Though you should lean above me broken-hearted,
I shall not care.

I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful.

When rain bends down the bough;
And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted
Than you are now.

THE DRONES OF WAR

53 X $4,500,000=$2,385,000,000

$4.5 million is the price of one U.S. Air Force Predator.

U.S.A. Today reports that "The Air Force has lost about 40% of its Predator unmanned aircraft and lacks enough trained crews to meet the demand for battlefield surveillance in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to military officials and analysts. Of the 139 Predators delivered to the Air Force, 53 have been lost. Iraq's extreme heat is damaging Predators, according to Air Force budget documents.

'A more capable aircraft air condioner is required,' the documents say.'

(USA Today/March 29, 2007)

This report also gives a pie chart that breaks down the causes of the 53 "lost" Predators:

Mechanical computer failure: 34%

Pilot error: 30.2%

Combat actions: 26.4%

Other: 9.4%

[Source: Air Force]

Advice to the Pentagon:

Get better air conditioners for these Predators.

Improve the training of the pilots.

Better yet...

GET OUT OF IRAQ!

USE THE EXPENSIVE PREDATORS TO PROTECT AMERICA AND HER BORDERS!

Over the last year many Americans have finally realized how thoroughly they were sold a bill of goods. The picture of the peaceable kingdom painted by the Bush administration nearly four years ago was that of a country, riven by religious and ethnic violence for centuries, suddenly turned into the equivalent of a Connecticut suburb: town meetings, friendly neighbors, a common purpose, perhaps a shopping mall.

Nearly four years of photographs and footage of dusty corpses, cinderblock barriers, shredded cars and bereaved families, and the absurdity of that view is absolute.

No one tries to sell that snake oil anymore. Now the party line is that American forces will get out, but they cannot get out now. They cannot get out now because Iraq would become a place of civil war, of untrammeled violence, of complete chaos.

Iraq has been a place of civil war, untrammeled violence, complete chaos for a long time now. American intervention has not made that better. It has made it worse.

Get out now. Provide plenty of consultants to organize police forces and help with reconstruction. Persuade the Iraqi government, such as it is, to ask for peacekeeping assistance from other nations. Put the arm on allies in the Middle East to participate for the sake of stability in the region. Recognize that much of this is about access to oil, and negotiate accordingly while trying to persuade Americans to go to rehab for their fossil-fuel addiction.

PAUL SANTORO BOB DYLAN AND A BLACK WIDOW

It was the summer of 1972 when I became a landscaper.

I went to high school with the person who got me the job.

Dave was a very tall guitar player who chain-smoked unfiltered Camel cigarettes.

(I inhaled an unfiltered Camel cigarette when I was 6 years old and passed out.)

My co-workers and I were a bunch of slow-moving, coffee-gulping landscapers.

I know that caffeine is supposed to increase metabolism, but it didn’t help us.

We would sit for as long as possible imbibing our coffee rather than landscaping the earth.

One landscaper was Paul Santoro.

Paul Santoro became both peer and mentor to me.

He was six years older than me.

He once said to me:

"I'll be your guru."

That line became part of an unpublished song we called "Don't guru-jew me."

I remember when we were in his faded-blue Volkswagen bug, slowly crawling down Pearl Street.

It was a bright, beautiful, cold and snowy day.

I forget exactly what we were discussing, but at one point in the conversation I told Paul that I thought he sometimes “got too heavy for me.”

Paul replied:

“Yeah, but just remember, heaviness descends from the heights.”

This statement made me poke my head out of the bug’s window to look up at the sky.

Paul’s words were as powerful as another quotation that has stuck in my memory:

“Everything that rises must converge.”

And many years later I would read these words:

The seal of Solomon known as the six-pointed Jewish star, contains the old wisdom: "as above, so below".

Paul was the same age as Bob Dylan, and he told me this one afternoon while we were walking on the side of a mountain, looking for moss-covered rocks.

He said, "I could have been Dylan. I traveled to the same places that he did."

Then Paul picked up a rock and found a black widow spider beneath it.

He picked the spider up and then said in his raspy voice:

"Look at this. It's beautiful!"

I was stunned when he picked up the black widow.

I was surprised when he gave such praise to this feared arachnid.

It was an impressive moment under the summer sun.

Paul played acoustic guitar in various restaurants.

He liked to play Bob Dylan songs.

His raspy voice was pretty good.

I enjoyed listening to him sing.

I showed Paul some of my poems, but he didn't seem too impressed, and he would recite a few of his own from memory.

Paul and his girlfriend Linda broke up, and then he moved to California.

I heard that he married a woman from France (or Italy) and had a child.

I believe he named the child Ivan.

I bet Paul is still strumming his guitar.

Iraq death toll survey 'robust'

http://www.theaustralian.news.com/

March 27, 2007

BRITISH government officials backed the methodology used by scientists who concluded that more than 600,000 Iraqis have been killed since the US-led invasion in 2003, the BBC reported today.

The Government publicly rejected the findings, published in The Lancet medical journal in October.

But the BBC said documents obtained under freedom of information legislation showed advisers concluded that the much-criticised study had used sound methods.

The Lancet study, conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the Al Mustansiriya University in Baghdad, estimated that 655,000 more Iraqis had died since March 2003 than one would expect without the war. The study estimated that 601,027 of those deaths were from violence.

The researchers, reflecting the inherent uncertainties in such extrapolations, said they were 95 per cent certain that the real number lay somewhere between 392,979 and 942,636 deaths.

The conclusion, based on interviews of households and not a body count, was disputed by some experts, and rejected by the US and British governments.

US President George W. Bush said he did not consider it “a credible report,” and Prime Minister Tony Blair's official spokesman said the study had extrapolated from an unrepresentative sample of the population.

However, the chief scientific adviser to the Defense Ministry, Roy Anderson, described the methods used in the study as “robust” and “close to best practice.”

THE AIR IS FULL OF WAR AND HOLLOW MEN

"This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper."
T.S. Eliot

Waiting and waiting for the crack of doom

The world seems to be going insane.

But I still go and buy milk, bread and eggs

Until the next day of shame.

War is in the air and

The air is full of war.

And although the Homeland is without war

America is at war.

The war machine is busy making its billions---

Making its new cruise missiles---

Making its new depleted uranium munitions

To fight tomorrow’s war.

The ice caps are melting

But the oil cartels are laughing.

Don't worry about tomorrow

Worry only about today.

You need more oil to burn and

We need more profits to earn.

War is in the air and

The world is full of war.

Waiting and waiting for the crack of doom

Is making us all go insane.

"Earlier this year I had a major operation for cancer. The operation and its after-effects were something of a nightmare. I felt I was a man unable to swim bobbing about under water in a deep dark endless ocean. But I did not drown and I am very glad to be alive.

However, I found that to emerge from a personal nightmare was to enter an infinitely more pervasive public nightmare - the nightmare of American hysteria, ignorance, arrogance, stupidity and belligerence; the most powerful nation the world has ever known effectively waging war against the rest of the world. "If you are not with us you are against us" President Bush has said. He has also said "We will not allow the world's worst weapons to remain in the hands of the world's worst leaders". Quite right. Look in the mirror chum. That's you.

The US is at this moment developing advanced systems of "weapons of mass destruction" and it prepared to use them where it sees fit. It has more of them than the rest of the world put together. It has walked away from international agreements on biological and chemical weapons, refusing to allow inspection of its own factories. The hypocrisy behind its public declarations and its own actions is almost a joke.

The United States believes that the three thousand deaths in New York are the only deaths that count, the only deaths that matter. They are American deaths. Other deaths are unreal, abstract, of no consequence.

The three thousand deaths in Afghanistan are never referred to.

The hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children dead through US and British sanctions which have deprived them of essential medicines are never referred to.

The effect of depleted uranium, used by America in the Gulf War, is never referred to. Radiation levels in Iraq are appallingly high. Babies are born with no brain, no eyes, no genitals. Where they do have ears, mouths or rectums, all that issues from these orifices is blood.

The two hundred thousand deaths in East Timor in 1975 brought about by the Indonesian government but inspired and supported by the United States are never referred to.

The half a million deaths in Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Argentina and Haiti, in actions supported and subsidised by the United States are never referred to.

The millions of deaths in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are no longer referred to.

The desperate plight of the Palestinian people, the central factor in world unrest, is hardly referred to.

But what a misjudgement of the present and what a misreading of history this is.

People do not forget. They do not forget the death of their fellows, they do not forget torture and mutilation, they do not forget injustice, they do not forget oppression, they do not forget the terrorism of mighty powers. They not only don't forget. They strike back.

The atrocity in New York was predictable and inevitable. It was an act of retaliation against constant and systematic manifestations of state terrorism on the part of the United Stated over many years, in all parts of the world."

I FEEL YOUR PAIN MARY JANE

It has been said that Carl Sagan did most of his writing while under the influence of marijuana.
(O.K. He was stoned out of his gourd!)
That’s why he sounded so unusual when he uttered “billions and billions and billions…”
If Bill Clinton had inhaled, there might have been fewer bombs falling on Bosnia.
If George W. Bush had snorted less cocaine and smoked more pot we might not be going bankrupt right now both morally and fiscally.
But who will ever know?
New Mexico now allows medical marijuana to be inhaled.
As so many have said so many times (most recently Bill Maher), marijuana has never killed anyone.
This is an exaggeration and probably false, but compared to alcohol and cigarettes, the lethality of marijuana is minimal.
We all know that the drug companies have abetted and assisted (i.e. paid) the FDA in order for these pharmaceutical giants to receive quick approval for their plethora of drugs so that they can make their billions and billions.
To legalize Mary Jane or heroin would compete with these hefty profits.
Drug lords and drug cartels would go out of business.
(But legalization could save the U.S. government billions in its so-called WAR ON DRUGS.)
The pharmaceutical serpent has always been eating its alchemical tail.
The American people have always swallowed the pill that the legalization of marijuana would be dangerous.
But the biggest dangers come from the crimes committed to obtain and sell the high-priced street drugs.
The Taliban are now funded by illegal drugs.
The poppies are their friends.
Making all drugs legal would endanger the huge profits currently made by drug companies and drug cartels.
The big business of asset seizures by law enforcement agencies would also disappear.
Legalizing drugs would create a safer world. Legalization of drugs would help us to win the war against terrorists.
The beautiful marijuana plant is still an evil weed because it threatens the Evil enterprise of DRUG LORDS and PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES.
Pity Mary Jane and feel her pain.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The late astronomer and author, Carl Sagan was a secret but avid marijuana smoker, crediting it with inspiring essays and scientific insight, according to Sagan's biographer.

"I find that today a single joint is enough to get me high ... in one movie theater recently I found I could get high just by inhaling the cannabis smoke which permeated the theater,'' wrote Sagan, who authored popular science books such as "Cosmos,'' "Contact,'' and "The Dragons of Eden.''

In the essay, Sagan said marijuana inspired some of his intellectual work.

"I can remember one occasion, taking a shower with my wife while high, in which I had an idea on the origins and invalidities of racism in terms of gaussian distribution curves,'' wrote the former Cornell University professor. "I wrote the curves in soap on the shower wall, and went to write the idea down.

Ann Druyan, Sagan's former wife, is a director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The nonprofit group promotes legalization of marijuana.

"We the American people would not do what George Bush and Richard Cheney have done in Iraq, all of it in our name. We would not, for utterly fabricated reasons, invade and occupy a sovereign country without provocation, killing hundreds of thousands of its citizens, driving millions more from their homes as refugees, torturing prisoners, destroying the country's economy and infrastructure, fomenting a vicious sectarian civil war, sacrificing 3,200 American lives, squandering half a trillion dollars, dangerously destabilizing the Middle East, blackening our country's character, and defaming every American citizen.
We are not a devious, savage, and warlike people. With considerable merit we think of Americans as honest, decent, and law-abiding, generous, tolerant, and humane. And we are patriotic, devoted to our country and to its ideals of freedom, democracy, peace, justice, and honesty in government.
The huge disconnect between who we are and what our government is doing in Iraq is painfully apparent, and the gap is insuperable.
It is imperative, therefore, that we hold the President and Vice President accountable not only for breaking domestic and international laws, but for violating the ethical and institutional essence of America and the ideals of her people. To rescue our country's elemental decency and to assure the security of its governing principles, it is our patriotic duty to impeach George Bush and Richard Cheney.
We consented to the invasion of Iraq because history told us we could trust our government to tell the truth. We were not naïve: the Vietnam war was also launched on a fabrication, but that was an aberration. We would not and did not expect it to be repeated. So we trusted and believed George Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice, and Colin Powell when they spoke to us. They said Saddam Hussein was complicit in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They said he had terrifying weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them to our shores. They said he could soon trigger a nuclear device in our country, killing hundreds of thousands of American people.
None of this was true. It was propaganda, intentionally designed by the White House Iraq Group to mislead the Congress and the American people. That is fraud, and fraud is a crime. Given the magnitude at which it was practiced, and the epic consequences, few would disagree: it is a high crime and misdemeanor. We need to impeach Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, as Elizabeth de la Vega has written, not as a matter of politics but as a matter law.
Brilliantly and knowingly, the Bush Administration introduced full-strength surrealism into our public discourse, in the form of their amorphous and fraudulent "global war on terrorism." They asked for our consent and the consent of the Congress to undertake it; thoroughly deceived, both the public and Congress acquiesced. There was no way a trusting country could know the "war on terrorism" was a fantasy: what the Bush Administration launched in fact was an international crime of military aggression.

At least six books make compelling cases for impeachment: The Impeachment of George W. Bush, by Elizabeth Holtzman and Cynthia Cooper; The Genius of Impeachment, by John Nichols; The Articles of Impeachment, by the Center for Constitutional Rights; Impeach the President: the Case Against Bush and Cheney, by Dennis Loo and Peter Phillips; The Case for Impeachment, by David Lindorff and Barbara Olshansky, and U.S. v Bush, by Elizabeth de la Vega. Tallying an overwhelming succession of impeachable offenses, all fraudulently disguised as worthy, even noble initiatives, the books tell the astonishing story of what the Bush Administration has done.
