MUHAMMAD THE TEDDY BEAR

SOMEWHERE IN SUDAN

Teacher: Students, today we will choose a name for our school mascot.
Student: Miss Juliann, what is a mascot?
Teacher: Well, Abdul, a mascot is a person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team.
Second Student: And what is our mascot, Miss Juliann?
Teacher: Our mascot is a teddy bear.
Third Student: Can we choose any name?
Teacher: Of course.
Second Student: How about Muhammad?
Teacher: Yes. That would honor the prophet. Class, are there any other names to consider?
All of the Students: (In unison): "No!"
Teacher: O.K. Then our mascot shall be called Muhammad.

OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY

Reporter: Dozens of Sudanese citizens are outraged that the name of the Muslim prophet Muhammad has been given to a toy teddy bear.
One Citizen: This teacher should be executed. Our prophet is not a toy!
Second Citizen: Muhammad has been defiled! This teacher should pay with her life.
Reporter: Miss Juliann, what do you have to say?
Teacher: We should have chosen the name Jesus.
